Are you looking for a way to interest kids, (grades K-4), in world hunger? We received this great idea of a Crazy CROP Hunger Walk for Kids from Evelyn Clickard of the Flagler County Walk. The kids walk at the same time as the adults but a different course is used. The course is labeled with several kinds of fun steps for the kids to do. It is suggested that small groups of kids complete the course together with at least one adult per group.
Meeting with the children a few times before the Walk to introduce the topic of world hunger and what it might mean to them is a great place to start. Some ideas on questions for the kids: Do they know what it feels like to be hungry? Have you ever been hungry? After some discussion, explaining that some kids, all around the world, are hungry all the time. Even kids in their own community may have to live with hunger on a daily basis.
On CROP Walk day, the kids' course is set up with signs along the route stating the kind of step they should do for each leg of the course. She suggests several different steps, and at the halfway point the kids turn around and do several different steps on the way back.
Some suggestions of steps are as follows:
- Bunny Hop: You must walk forward 6, hop for 3, walk forward 6, hop 3, continue repeating until the end of section.
- Peanut Butter: (Skippy Peanut Butter, of course!) Walk 5, skip 5, walk 5, skip 5, continue repeating to end of section.
- Slinky Slide: Slide (sort of like a skip) to the left side down the path 6 times, turn and do 6 on the right side, then walk forward 6, repeat pattern to end of section.
- Zig Zag: From side to side of path on and angle, keep repeating….
At turnaround sign, begin return with steps on back side of sign.
- Yo Yo: Walk forward 8 steps, (without turning around), take 2 steps backwards, walk forward 8, backward 2, continue repeating.
- Slow Poke: Walk 7, (turn around), walk backward 7, (turn around), walk forward 7, continue repeating to end of section.
- Whirling Dervish: Walk forward 10 steps, spin around on the spot in a full circle, walk forward 10, turn around, walk forward 10, continue repeating to end of section.
Thanks, Evelyn, for a great idea!
