Thanks to all the walkers and sponsors that contributed online towards CROP Hunger Walks. Funds raised through Fall 2007 New Jersey CROP Hunger Walks total $42,220!! Walkers can increase the funds they raise by setting up a personalized web page, or sign up with others as a team, and e-mail requests for sponsorship to friends and family - near and far. Walkers can then receive credit card contributions from sponsors, or sponsors can mail their donation in. Please help spread the word about online fundraising... it works wonders! Member of St George's Church Leads CROPWALKERS

Susan Mangasarian leeds WalkersFor the second straight year, Maplewood resident Susan Mangasarian, 83, led members of five local churches in the annual South Orange/Maplewood CROP Hunger Walk. The Walk raised more than $4,000 to fight hunger, both close to home and around the world. Mangasarian, who has attended St. George’s Episcopal Church in Maplewood for more than half a century, challenged her fellow parishioners to sponsor her walk, and the church’s Outreach Committee made $1,000 in matching donations. Other churches participating and raising funds included Prospect Presbyterian in Maplewood; Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic and First Presbyterian & Trinity, both in South Orange; and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic in Vailsburg.

CWS Matching Gift Program

One of the smartest ways to increase your giving is through a Matching Gift program, where a company, foundation or individual will match donations, which you make to Church World Service. These matches are often dollar for dollar, which doubles your charitable-donation power. CROP Walkers in the 2003 New Providence, New Jersey CROP Hunger Walk increased their giving by $30,000 through matching grants.

How Do I Participate?

  1. Ask your employer if they participate in a Matching Gift program.

  2. Obtain a matching gift form and donation guidelines from your employer’s human resources or payroll department.

  3. Complete the donor section of the form and submit it along with your check to:
Church World Service, Matching Gift Program
PO Box 968, Elkhart, IN 46515-0968

  4. If you participate in a CROP Hunger Walk, include the city and date of the Walk with your check and application. Matching Gift applications should be turned into the Walk treasurer who will forward it to Church World Service with the CROP Walk funds.

  5. The form is processed in the Church World Service Matching Gift office and returned to your employer.

  6. If approved, the company matching gift checks are sent to Church World Service to match your already generous gift.

  7. If you are a member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, contact your Thrivent Financial for Lutheran’s local chapter treasurer for more information about the “Care Abounds in Communities” program and other Lutheran gift matching opportunities.

Some tips…

Many companies will match personal gifts such as cash, stocks, marketable securities and even the value of your volunteer time. Companies may also match gifts from employee spouses or retirees.

Some companies do not have a Matching Gift program, but are still willing to match your donation. Go ahead and ask, and encourage them to create a Matching Gift Program.

Invite your employer and co-workers to visit the Church World Service website at www.churchworldservice.org

For more information about matching gifts, please contact Anne Regier at or call 1-800-297-1516, ext. 361 .

Thrivent Financial For Lutherans

“Care Abounds In Communities Program”

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans offer ways for active volunteer chapters to add to their community’s CROP Hunger Walk income through supplemental grant programs, one of which is the “Care Abounds In Communities Program”.

When Thrivent Financial chapter service teams participate in a local CROP Hunger Walk, whether through providing leadership or actively walking and seeking sponsors, chapter service teams can request supplemental dollars from Thrivent Financial.

How it works:

  • At least 6 Thrivent Financial members from different households form a service team.
  • Prior to the CROP Hunger Walk, the team applies to the local Thrivent Financial chapter for approval of the supplemental grant.
  • Each service team can apply for a maximum of up to $1,600.00 from their local Thrivent Financial chapter.
  • Once the Walk funds have been deposited with Church World Service and the local Thrivent Financial chapter has approved the grant application, notify the CWS Matching Gift Program in Elkhart to begin processing the supplemental grant.
