Church World Service will be partnering with the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church in the planning of the 2008 Festival of Sharing. The Festival of Sharing will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.

The Festival of Sharing is a celebration of what God in Christ has done for us in providing the harvest, and our year-long efforts in bringing in the harvest.

The Festival of Sharing is an awareness of the needs of others in the world and ways to express solidarity with our sisters and brothers.

The Festival of Sharing is a fellowship with persons from other churches who have mutual concerns and interests.

The Festival of Sharing is an opportunity for a “hands on” approach to mission.

The Festival of Sharing is a motivation under the power of God to become more involved with the ministries of our local congregations.

The Festival of Sharing is an event to celebrate and inform people about the various ways The United Methodist Church in the West Ohio Conference is touching the world through mission work.

The theme of the 2008 Festival of Sharing is “Hunger: An Emerging Disaster in Ohio”.

The events of the day will be held at the Otterbein College Campus Center and it’s adjacent areas at 100 W. Home Street in Westerville.

Churches are encouraged to participate in the mission of giving by collecting kits for the Church World Service Kit Program. Ever since the beginning of the CWS Kit Program, United Methodists have worked hand in hand with Church World Service to assemble and ship kits to parts of the U.S. and around the world. CWS and UMCOR have an agreement to share kits when needed and available to fulfill shipments.

Our goal for this year’s Festival of Sharing is to fill a truck with 35,000 pounds of Kits.

In order to reach this goal, we need your help. The kits we will be collecting are Hygiene (Health) Kits, School Kits, and Baby Kits.

In July of 2007, Rachel Kauffman and Susan Givler, long-time CROP Hunger Walk participants in Bellefontaine, Ohio, were discussing how important the CROP Hunger Walk was to their community.

“It used to be so great to see the churches come together to help put an end to hunger. Then it was sad to see that the interest in the CROP Walk had dwindled to the point where there wasn’t even a walk held in 2006,” said Rachel.

Susan and Rachel decided to coordinate the CROP Hunger Walk in Bellefontaine and to give it a new twist: a Grandparent and Grandchild Walk.

“It is important to us that we pass on this commitment of serving others to the younger generation,” said Susan.

The Grandparent and Grandchild Walk was exactly what was needed to bring new life to the Bellefontaine CROP Hunger Walk. Eleven grandparent/grandchildren sets participated in the walk, raising over $2,500. But the enthusiasm didn’t end there, the entire community got involved and over 200 walkers raised over $23,000.

That was an increase of 1050% over the last time they walked in 2005!
Margaret Brugler Rogers spent her life helping others and making the world a better place to live. Lives of people world wide have improved as a result of Ms. Rogers’ efforts.

She attended Antioch and the Ohio State University and then enrolled in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. After being trained as a medical technician, she requested a position where she could help paraplegics paralyzed from the waist down at Mayo General Hospital in Galesburg, Illinois. About her work at the Mayo Hospital she wrote, “For this truly was an opportunity for doing something for those who had already been willing to give their lives that we might retain our freedom.”

Shortly after her 1946 discharge, Ms. Rogers went to Haiti. Realizing the extent of poverty in Haiti, she came home and began conducting bazaars in order to send money and food to Haitians.

While working in the Logan County Farm Bureau, Ms. Rogers was offered a job by the new director of the Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP). From 1948 to 1976, she went from secretary through the ranks to Regional Director, the only woman to hold that position in the United States. Ms. Rogers led two trips around the world to visit places that were recipients of CROP assistance.

Ms. Rogers was instrumental in the development of the Grace Children’s Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She organized and devoted her time to Treasure Mart which funded beds for the Children’s Hospital in Haiti. At the age of 74, she founded OWLS (Older Wiser Lifelong Scholars), a college-level program for elders in the Westminster-Thurber community where she lived and all of Central Ohio. She selected top-notch presenters and persuaded them to lecture for much less than their usual fee.

After dedicating her entire life to helping people, Ms. Rogers donated her body to the Ohio State University Medical School upon her death in 2005

Staff Writer
Wapakoneta Daily News

For the third year, members of six churches came together to raise awareness and money for hunger and poverty in nations across the world and in the homes of their neighbors and friends Saturday.

But this year Wapakoneta’s branch of the CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk had a new name and a new route.

The Walk was re-christened the Tom Roberts Memorial CROP Walk in memory of the late Rev. Tom Roberts, the former pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church who died in July of brain cancer.

“It’s really great that we can do this for him,” said co-organizer Becky Jordan, a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. “He was an amazing man.” The Walk is a national event that began in North Dakota in 1969, but Roberts brought it to Wapakoneta three years ago.

“He came to the (Wapakoneta Area) Ministerial Association and said, ‘You know folks, this is something we can do together,’” said the Rev. Greg Roberts, pastor of Salem United Methodist Church. “We’re always looking for ecumenical things to do together.”

Parishioners from St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, First United Methodist, St. Paul United Church of Christ, Salem United Methodist, Moulton Trinity Lutheran, and St. Joseph Catholic Church met Saturday in the store’s parking lot to snack on donuts provided by City Bakery, granola bars, fruit, and other treats before starting the 2-mile Walk through a neighborhood known as the Flower streets behind Miller’s Corral. The Walk passed in front of Robert’s house.

Walkers collected pledges to donate to the cause.

Some donated their own money.

One hundred-eleven walkers took part in the Wapakoneta event this year, more than the first two year’s combined total of 110.

The proceeds were split between national and local causes. Of the money raised, 12.5 percent went to God’s Storehouse in Wapakoneta, another 12.5 percent was donated to Mercy Unlimited and 75 went to Church World Service to be distributed to overseas ministries.

Mercy Unlimited Executive Director Tammy Brown said raising awareness is more important than raising funds for local causes

“It’s really not about the money,” Brown said. “It’s about letting people know there’s kids in America who go hungry.”

“The importance is to increase awareness of local and national hunger issues here at the local level,” co-organizer Darrel Acker said.

“We have an overabundance,” said Robin Klock, who is Christian education director of First English Lutheran Church. “That way we share the love of God. Pastor (Tom) Roberts would say it’s important that we spread the love of God through what we do.”

For 21 years, Church World Service has partnered with the Festival of Sharing to help provide health kits, school kits and baby kits to thousands of families and individuals around the world. This year the Festival of Sharing was held on the campus of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. Hundreds of people gathered together for this celebration of sharing, which has become an annual tradition of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church.

The day could not have been possible without the willing hospitality of a small group of Otterbein students led by their chaplain Monty Bradley. The students were from the Religious Life programs and Sigma Delta Phi Fraternity. For both groups, service to others is at the heart of their organizations.

The students helped in taking care of the physical arrangements for the weekend. Some of their responsibilities included setting up for the event on Friday night, unloading the care kits from cars, packing boxes and assembling flood buckets. Their biggest responsibility included loading the entire 53-foot semi-trailer. All of their efforts (and sweat, because it was a hot and humid day) made the day run smoothly. What a contribution!

In order to recognize the efforts of these student volunteers, a special dinner was held in their honor on November 19, 2007. Sponsored by their chaplain Monty Bradley and the Religious Life program, the students were treated to a steak dinner and a time of fellowship to honor their participation in the Festival of Sharing..

After dinner, students from both the Religious Life program and Sigma Delta Phi Fraternity received the “Golden Sneaker Award” for their outstanding contribution to the success of The Festival of Sharing. Sponsored by Church World Service and the Festival of Sharing, this award recognizes the dedication of the students to “get on their feet” and to make a difference both locally and around the world.

Matthew Stevens, Ohio Regional Director of Church World Service, presented the awards to Megan Witt and Chris Wyse. Megan is a senior and is the chair of the Religious Life program and holds many other leadership roles on campus. Chris is a senior and he is the president of Sigma Delta Phi and an active member and leader of Religious Life.

Church World Service is proud of our partnership with The United Methodist Church, the West Ohio Conference Festival of Sharing Committee and Otterbein College. We would like to thank everyone who offered their time and love to be a part of sharing Christ’s love throughout our world. A special thanks is offered to the Otterbein College students who made the Festival of Sharing a huge success.

Mark your calendars now to join us for the 2008 Festival of Sharing, to be held on Saturday, October 4th on the campus of Otterbein College.
