CROP Hunger Walk Spiritual Resources
God of life
God of those who walk miles for water,
God those whose only supply is contaminated,
Bringing death, not life.
May water clean and life-giving,
Be available to every living creature.
May that vision move forward.
May your will be done.

Prayer at the Digging of a Well
O Lord our God, Almighty and All-powerful, Who creates all and transforms simply as You will it; Who out of ineffable and incomprehensible wisdom finds passage in the impassible; Who from a dry rock bestowed a flowing stream of water and satisfied You thirsting people: As the same Master of All, hear now the supplication of us Your unworthy servants and grant to us water in this place-sweet and tasty, sufficient for need, safe for consumption, so that in this Your most-holy and magnificent Name may be glorified: of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy spirit, Now and ever and onto ages of ages. Amen
Orthodox Tradition, Russia
It is not from your own possessions that you are bestowing alms on the poor, you are but restoring them what is theirs by right. For what was given to everyone for the use of all, you have taken for your exclusive use. The earth belongs not to the rich, but to everyone. Thus, far from giving lavishly, you are but paying part of your debt.
St. Ambrose, 340-397
Rallying Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for all the blessings you have bestowed on us; teach us to share them with others. We ask that you be with us this evening as we prepare for the CROP Walk. Help us to discern your will.
Lord, we live in a world of turmoil and chaos. Yet the message out there right now is that all we have to do is think positive thoughts and everything will turn out for the good, for our good. Lord, we know the message of your salvation and grace and that message is no secret. It is a message we want to shout to our neighbors throughout the world, to shout to our neighbors within our own communities.
As we begin this undertaking energize us. Then, please open the hearts of our congregations. Encourage them to give-give of their finances, but even more, to give of themselves. Help us to relieve the world’s poverty, one person at a time, one country at a time, until your children no longer suffer from hunger. We ask these things in your name and the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Yom Kippur: A Time of Fasting
During our Yom Kippur fast, we read these words from Isaiah (58:5-7):
Is such the fast I desire,
A day for people to starve their bodies?...
No, this is the fast I desire:
To unlock the fetters of wickedness,
And untie the cords of the yoke
To let the oppressed go free;
To break off every yoke.
It is to share your bread with the hungry,
And to take the wretched poor into your home;
When you see the naked, to clothe them,
And not to ignore your own kin.
As we read, we are reminded of millions of people who do not choose to fast for a day of religious reflection, but who go hungry for days or weeks at a time — some for all of their lives. Millions of poor and hungry people are powerless to change their circumstances unless we — collectively and individually — reach out to them. Yom Kippur, our day of fasting and reflection, reminds us of our ability to share our bread with the hungry.
